What is an Organic Mattress?
We have all heard of organic food and organic vegetables, but what is an organic mattress? Is it really better than a traditional mattress and how is it better? Is it healthier than a regular mattress and does it really worth the money to spend on it when a traditional mattress is much cheaper? We will attempt to answer all of these questions here. If you have additional questions, please let us know and we will research it.
Organic vegetables are grown without chemicals and pesticides and organic milk comes from cows that are not fed chemical hormones therefore they are better for us. Organic mattresses are made without toxins and chemicals and organic mattresses are made with only organic and non-toxic metarials. Traditional mattresses are made with synthetic materials and are "enhanced" with posionous chemicals that are proven to cause many sideeffects including and up to cancer, birht defects, etc. If you would like to know more about what is in your traditional mattress, click here.
A regular mattress is made with many different chemicals which have been linked to childhood and adulthood health problems and deseases. There are plasticizers and fire retardant chemicals in the vinyl covering and in the foam inside of a traditional mattress. More and more doctors and health professionals are recommending organic mattresses especially for babies and children.
Organic mattresses are certified under the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). The largest U.S. GOTS approved certifier is Oregon Tilth Certified Organic (OTCO). GOTS standards require that all fiber and fabrics, must be made from certified materials that meet the National Organic Program (NOP) standard and are processed in accordance with the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). All other components (such as innersprings, fire protection, etc.) must meet stringent non-toxic standards.
The question arises, whether mattresses that are labeled "green", "natural", or "eco-friendly" are just as good as organic mattresses. The answer is NO. Green, natural, and eco are terms that are not regulated such as organic is. For example, "plant derived" or "soybean" foam used in many "eco" mattress models are over 80% petroleum/chemical based and are not really "made of soybeans." "Bamboo" fabric, also common in "eco" models is really rayon. It is typically made using environmentally toxic chemicals with no trace of the bamboo plant in the finished product. Many of these "eco" materials may sound good, but they are not really "natural" and are certainly not focused on eliminating harmful chemicals.
